Battery Sulphation

During operation cycles of lead-acid batteries, lead sulphur from the electrolyte combines with oxygen as the battery is discharged to form lead sulphate crystals which bond to the battery plates. This process is called sulphation. Over time the sulfate crystals expand, choking the plates, reducing efficiency to the point where the battery will no longer accept a charge or supply a load. Sulphation build-up on battery plates is a leading cause of battery failure, the insulating barrier produced around the battery plates, prevents the electrochemical process from taking place.
